Siem Reap
The Khmer empire (technically the “Angkor empire”) was one of history’s great civilisations, with a population of over one million people at its zenith. The majority of the population eventually left the area, although it was never truly abandoned. The renaissance of the region occurred after French exploration in the 1860s, and the tourists having been coming ever since!
