Siem Reap

The Khmer empire (technically the “Angkor empire”) was one of history’s great civilisations, with a population of over one million people at its zenith. The capital of the empire moved around over its history from 802 CE into the 15th century, eventually settling in the Angkor complex. The majority of the population eventually left the area, although it was never truly abandoned. The renaissance of the region occurred after French exploration in the 1860s, and the tourists having been coming ever since!
