Designed by engineer Miozzi in 1931, Ponte della Libertà connects Venice’s city centre to the mainland. Benito Mussolini inaugurated it in 1933 and gave it the name “Ponte Littorio”. After the end of the Second World War, the bridge was renamed “Liberty Bridge” in honour of Venice’s liberation from the Nazis. Ponte della Libertà has made it possible to reach Venice by car. A railway bridge has existed nearby since 1846.
