Ponte dei Sospiri

A historic, charming Baroque style bridge made of Istrian stone, Ponte dei Sospiri was constructed in 1614 CE. The bridge was designed by the nephew of the designer of the Rialto bridge and connects the Prigioni Nuove (New Prison) to the interrogation and rooms of the Magistrates (the state inquisitors). The name was said to have originated from the fact that prisoners would get their last glimpse of Venice (particularly, San Giorgio Maggiore) before heading to the cells to rot.
