The government and official residence of the Doges (similar to a Duke) of Venice since 1340 CE, the Palazzo Ducale (Palazzo Ducale Venezia – Doge’s Palace) is one of the “must see” locations in Venice. The palace is a must for anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of the historical, cultural and political importance of Venice. This is a building that until 1797 CE has followed the developments of the millennial Republic of Venice (Palazzo Ducale was the seat of the Doge of Venice).
It remained the seat of power up to 1797 when Napoleon took over the city, ending the 1100 years of Ducal rule of the city. Then came the Habsburgs under Austrian rule. Finally, annexation in 1866 brought Venice into the Italian fold.
