Chiesa di San Simeone Piccolo

A relative newcomer by Venice standards (built in 1738 CE), Chiesa di San Simeone Piccolo is named after Saints Simeon and Jude. It is commonly referred to as San Simeon Piccolo to distinguish it from the nearby church of San Simeone Profeta (San Simeon Grande). The bold Neoclassical design greets those who arrive in Venice by train. It has a unique circular shape, which is the first church in Venice to have this feature. But what distinguishes this church from others is the remarkable octagonal cemetery crypt, the only catacomb complex in Venice.
