Predecessors of Jayavarman VII used to reside in the royal palace areas of Phiumeanakas and Baphuon, the previous capitals before Bayon was constructed. The Terrace of the Elephants and Terrace of the Leper King are remnants of the Eastern walls of the royal palace area, with only some of the 300m wall still visible. The Victory gatelines up directly with the entrance to the royal palace area.
Located in the ancient Royal Palace compound, Phimeanakas (“Celestial palace”) is the tallest scalable temple in Angkor Thom (although it’s no longer allowed to climb up). Built under the reign of Rajendravarman and completed by Suryavarman I, it became the centre of his capital. According to historical records, the temple was crowned with a golden tower. There are two nearby sandstone reflecting pools to the North, although the jungle is working hard to reclaim them.
