East Mebon

East Mebon was constructed under Rajendravarman II in the late 10th century CE in what was a large baray (body of water). This temple-mountain has three levels and five towers. East Mebon was built in in honour of the king’s parents and dedicated to Hindu god Shiva. Inscriptions on the temple also shows that the temple was constructed to help re-establish the continuity of kingship at Angkor. With its red-orange sandstone construction material and decayed state, it has an appearance of giant ant mounds rising majestically from the ground.
