Now the foundations of Iglesia De Santo Domingo, Qorikancha was once the site of the most impressive temple in the Incan empire. Known as the Temple of the Sun, it was constructed in the 15th century, and was home to approximately 4,000 priests and workers. Tales describe gold panels, life-size gold statues of humans and animals, gold altars, all creating a dazzling effect. The site also served as the main astrological observatory for the Incas, and the site is still aligned to take advantage of light during the Summer solstice.
Inside, you can admire the phenomenal stonework that remains of key temples dedicated to the sun, moon, thunder, lightning, rainbows, and the planet Venus. These structures have stood up to centuries of earthquakes and look like they were constructed yesterday – incredible!
