Nicknamed the Red Fortress because of its reddish walls, Puka Pukara sits at an altitude of 3,580m, and affords great views of Cusco and the surrounding Sacred Valley. Many believe that Puka Pukara was a military outpost during the height of the Incan empire because of its high walls, watchtowers, and warehouses.

According to legend, the king would often visit here when taking baths at the nearby Tambomachay. This meant the king’s entourage would be in need of some fortified digs during their stay.
