One of the greatest examples of Incan architecture, the area now designated as the Ollaytaytambo Archaeological Park acts in equal measure as an agricultural centre, ceremonial site, and fort. The Temple area, also known as “Araqhama” in Quechua, does have an appearance somewhat of a fort. However, it really is a ceremonial centre with a number of distinct elements.
The key features to keep an eye out for:
- Diez Hornacinas – A wall of 10 small windows that was used to pay homage to the ancestors of the Inca Pachacutec.
- Templo del Sol (Sun Temple) – The centre of religious activities on the site, although the site has largely been destroyed. Includes what has become known as the Wall of the Six Monoliths, each weighing about 50 tons.
- Zona Militar – The military heart of the complex, complete with narrow passageways and a series of small buildings.
