Also known as Wayna Picchu, Huayna Picchu is the iconic backdrop to Machu Picchu, sitting around 260m above the site. Affording excellent views over Machu Picchu, you’ll need a separate permit to enter.
The entry point is nearby the Sacred Rock, with a warden checking permits (this is strictly policed). After a short hike, you’ll be presented with two paths, with the short one leading to the summit, the longer one a circuit around the peak. The short path becomes a steep path for around 30 minutes, followed by a rock tunnel (crawling involved) to reach the terraces and storehouses at the summit. Heading down is along steep and narrow steps to then re-join the path.
Allow an hour if everything goes to plan, much more if its wet or there’s traffic.
