Rano Raraku

Rano Raraku is the volcanic crater that produced the majority of the materials used to create the moai. In fact, this stone quarry is still littered with moai of different shapes and sizes, most are unfinished / abandoned. This includes the largest moai found, at 21.6m, and estimated to weigh a whopping 270 tonnes.

Keep an eye out for Tukuturi, a distinct moai that looks like a bearded man in a kneeling position. It represents a pose that islanders form when performing choruses in riu (festivals).

The crater is also one of the sources of freshwater for the islanders. Animals can be seen grazing here, and visitors may not be permitted to wander about freely.
