Pukao (top knots)

The pukao is a topknot or headdress that indicates the status of the moai. According to Polynesian tradition, only the chieftain wears a pukao. That’s because they believe that a person’s mana (power) is preserved in the hair. This feature was added in the more recent moai, and is made from red scoria found at Puna Pau. The people of Rapa Nui believe that the colour red signifies nobility.
