Located on the North coast in front of the Bay of La Perouse, Te Pito Kura is the site of the largest moai statue ever mounted on an ahu. The moai is named Paro, weighs approximately 80 tonnes, and its pukao (12 tonnes) is one of the largest carved. The moai now lies face down on the ground with its body split in half.
Also on the site is a large oval-shaped stone 80cm in diameter, believed to contain special qualities. This may be due to the stone’s high iron content which causes the it to retain heat differently to nearby rocks, and also to interfere with magnetic compasses. The expression “Te Pito Kura” means “navel of light”, which is believed to be attributed to this stone (it’s quite round and smooth).
