Found to the East of Hanga Roa, Ahu Akahanga isn’t as well preserved as most other ahu sites across the island. Don’t let its current state deceive you, as Ahu Akahanga was one of the more important historical sites for Easter Island. It is also the burial place of Hotu Matu’a (the first chief of Easter Island). Here you can see the remains of a small village, as well as the unrestored 18m ahu and 13 moai. In addition, you can see up-close several pukao that are dotted around the site.
