A private water palace for the Karangasem regency, Ujung Water Palace is also referred to as Taman Soekasada Ujung. The site consists of three large pools of water with a central structure (known as “Balai Gili”) used for entertaining important guests and dignitaries. Building commenced in 1909 and reached its current design (and dimensions) around 1921. The Dutch (European) influences in the design of the “Balai Gili” can clearly be seen as the palace was constructed during the last decades of the Dutch East Indies occupation.
The palace was damaged in the big Mount Agung eruption of 1963, and sustained damage due to a large earthquake in 1975, although the damage isn’t obvious these days.
