Tirta Empul

Translating as “Holy Spring Temple”, Tirta Empul temple is important for Balinese Hindus for purification rituals. The temple draws its water source from nearby Tampak Siring. Records indicate that a temple was constructed here in the 10th century CE and was dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. The site has largely stayed the same since.

The main pool has 30 waterspouts and is divided into two sections. Each of the fountains has a unique name and spiritual function, with two being reserved for death rituals only. Balinese Hindus will bring offerings and place them above specific waterspouts, asking the gods for help with illness or disease.
