According to Balinese Hinduism, Pura Pusering Jagat is the “Navel of the universe” as per the translation of the temple’s name. The temple, also known as Pura Puser Tasik, is one of the six sad kahyangan. Constructed in the 14th century, the key feature of the temple is a stone holy water vessel with carvings depicting the Hindu myth of the Churning of the Ocean of Milk. Inside there is also rumoured to be a secret tunnel connecting the temple to Nusa Penida (Penida Island) off to the South East of Bali. The entrance to this secret tunnel is believed to be blocked by a large immoveable stone.
Having said all of this, the current-day appearance looks as though the temple has either been abandoned or is hardly used. There is a cockfighting ring outside of the temple, complete with a platform for the referee to preside over matches. This concrete structure has been all-but overrun by weeds as though the ground is gradually subsuming the temple.
