Built on the side of Gunung Batukaru (the second highest volcano in Bali), Pura Luhur Batukaru is considered one of the nine directional temples of Bali. Constructed around the 11th century CE, it was destroyed in the 17th century and only recently restored in the 1950s. The hillside location adds to the mysterious ambience, with a layer of fog / cloud often present.
The focal point in the temple is a seven-tier pagoda of the Hindu Mount Meru and is dedicated to the god of Gunung Batukaru, Mahadewa. Quite a bit of the site remains off-limits for non-worshippers, however you’ll be able to explore and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
