Pura Kehen

Built in the 11th century CE, Pura Kehen is the largest temple in the Bangli regency. During the time of the nine kingdoms of Bali, Pura Kehen hosted official ceremonies for the Bangli Kingdom. The temple pays homage to the Hindu god of fire, Agni (the name “kehen” translates as “flame”). Built on a hillside, the temple is split into eight levels. When you reach the top tier, look for the 11-tier meru dedicated to the Balinese Hindu god Sang Hyang Api (another name for Agni). In line with traditional Balinese temple design, there’s also a candi bentar at the mid-level.

On the grounds is a large banyan tree that is believed to be at least 400 years old. The loss of branches is believed to signify impending death, with the direction of the broken branch foreshadowing who in the social strata is likely to meet their doom.
