This “Bat cave temple” (rough translation) tells you everything in its name – the temple area is centred around a bat cave. Pura Goa Lawah is considered to be one of the holiest temples in Bali, serving as a protector against dark spirits from the ocean. The area was believed to be established around 1007 CE. Legend has it that a giant naga (snake) resides in the cave, feasting on the thousands of bats that call it home.
