Pura Besakih

The holiest Hindu temple in Bali, earning it the nickname of the “Mother Temple”. Situated near Mount Agung at 1,000m altitude, the sprawling site has over 80 temples and structures built across six levels. The site is named after a dragon deity, Naga Besukian, believed to inhabit Mount Agung.

An eruption of Mount Agung in 1963 narrowly avoided destroying the temple complex. This (understandably!) was considered a miracle by the Balinese people.
