Pura Puseh Desa Batuan, to use its full name, is found on the western side of Batuan village along the main road. This structure dates back to the 11th century CE, including inscriptions that describe the creation of Batuan village. The split gate entrance and three-storey pagodas are typical Balinese Hinduism architecture. The pagoda represents the Hindu Mount Meru and mimics the temple at Besakih. In the Tri Kahyangan tradition, Pura Batuan is considered a puseh temple dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu (the protector) – look for the padmasana (lotus throne) pillar shrine.
The origin of the name “Batuan” references an ancient practise of large stones being used as the meeting point for spiritual practices (“Batu” means stone in Bahasa).
